Back in 2015, a group of multidisciplinary creatives set out to transform an abandoned industrial space in Bucharest’s former cotton factory into Romania’s very first makerspace.
After six months of hard work, with the support of 25 people and 9 partners, the 650 m² space was ready to welcome makers and entrepreneurs from the creative industries—people who needed not just a workspace, but a community to fuel their passion.
What was once an empty factory came back to life, becoming a thriving hub for Bucharest’s creative industries.
It all started in 2015, when Nod Makerspace took shape across 650 m²—a mix of a 350 m² open coworking space, 10 private studios, a meeting room, and a 300 m² fabrication and prototyping area, complete with wood and metal workshops.
By 2016, the space had grown to 1,050 m², with 16 private studios and an expanded coworking area. Recognition soon followed—official visits from the technocratic government, the European Commission, and other public figures, along with awards like European Start-Up Award and Best Co-Working of the Year. These milestones not only validated our work but gave us the confidence to push further, shaping a creative industries hub unlike anything else in Romania.
Then came 2017, a year that marked another turning point. We launched the Materials Library, a pioneering project that allowed creatives to explore and interact with an ever-growing collection of materials. With it, Nod Makerspace expanded once again, opening up new coworking and event spaces on the first floor of the same industrial building.
